Care and activities

Bookings have closed

Care and activities and the excursion are at capacity. If you were still hoping to book into these, please contact Jodie directly on 0400 524 631 or pjmutimer@bigpond.com

Jodie Mutimer (CHARGE mum) and her team of volunteers (and paid carers) want every child to have a great conference experience, whether they are staying onsite or heading out for the excursion. There are various options for infants, children, teenagers, adults, and siblings, who are NOT attending the conference presentations.

Onsite Day Care

Saturday (8:30am-5:00pm) and Sunday (8:30am-1:00pm)

For those who require onsite care with some support during the day. We have a dedicated quiet room and a dedicated activities room. These rooms have good lighting and are situated very close to the main conference room (see hotel floor plan). Activities will include art, music and dancing, DVDs, games, beanbags for relaxing in and playstation games.

Families must provide care plans and emergency plans for each child using this care as we are employing paid carers. You are welcome to bring your own electronic devices, DVD player, laptop etc to these rooms. No responsibility will be taken by Bayview Eden Hotel or CSAA for any items of value being lost, damaged or stolen.

Note: Book this when you register by 11 May. We are unable to accommodate late requests at the conference.

Onsite Evening Care

Saturday 5:00pm-10:00pm

For those who require onsite evening care during Secret Mens and Secret Womens Business (5:00-6:00pm) and the Gala Dinner (6:30-10:00pm). Only those who are booked into this service will be able to access evening care. Families must provide care plans and emergency plans for each child using this care as we are employing paid carers.

Note: Book this care when you register by 11 May. We are unable to accommodate late requests at the conference.

Day Excursion
Saturday 9:30am-3:30pm (Offsite)

Children, teenagers and adults are welcome to attend this all ages event. This excursion will be a fun, interesting and proactive day supported by a large group of volunteers (1 carer to 2 people).*

We may have a surprise or two. We will be touring the city, visiting Melbourne Museum and stopping for ice cream along the way. PLUS we will also be visiting Essendon Airport to see a police helicopter! Victoria Police have kindly offered to show us around.**

This museum caters for special needs with nursing and change areas, accessible toilets and wheelchair access. We will have enough carers to split the groups into age appropriate programmes and people can visit at their own pace.

Some of the exhibits include:

We will be travelling by bus from the hotel, leaving at 9:30am and returning at 3:30pm. The bus caters for wheelchairs and our driver has been donated to us by the Melbourne Bus Company. The museum is free entry.

*All volunteers have working with children checks
** This is a working police helicopter, if it is required for an emergency on the day, we won’t be able to visit.

Note: Book this care when you register by 11 May.

Meet and Greet Friday Evening (6:00-8:00pm)

Children and teenagers/young adults with CHARGE will have their own opportunity to meet on Friday night. We have dedicated rooms set aside where children and teenagers/young adults can meet and get to know one other. There will be paid and unpaid carers in the room during this time to assist with facilitating social interaction and support. Anyone is welcome to come and go from these rooms during the two hour event.

Teenager/Adult Chill Out Room

Open all weekend (Note: UNSUPERVISED)

A relaxing space for teenagers/adults away from the hustle and bustle of the conference. A place to chill out together or just spend some quiet time.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This chill out room is unsupervised. It is expected that those who use this space are independent and do not require supervision. Volunteers and carers will NOT be provided in this room. This room is not secure and will remain open during the weekend. Do not leave items of value. No responsibility will be taken by Bayview Eden Hotel or CSAA for any items being lost, damaged or stolen.

Gala Dinner Saturday Evening (6:30-10:00pm)

Enjoy a sit down three course meal at our Gala Dinner event (soft drinks included, alcohol at bar prices).  Everyone is welcome to attend the dinner including children, teenagers, extended family members and friends. Dress: smart casual.

CHARGE Got Talent!

It’s on again! Show us what you got. Sing, dance, tell a joke, do a magic trick, share a good news story – whatever you want to do, the stage is yours! Mandy Nolan (our MC) has kindly offered to help our CHARGE Got Talent! entrants rehearse their performance. This will take place between 5:00-6:30pm on Saturday.

Let us know by Friday 17 May so that we can help you with any arrangements and add your name to the list of talented performers for 2018.

Closed Session with Kasee and Dan

Sunday 8:30am-10:30am

Register: Email m.rich@chargesyndrome.org.au  by  11 May 2018

For this session, the recommended age is 16 years+ and older. Only individuals with CHARGE and their interpreter will be present. The session will provide a series of presentations, discussions, and question and answer formats for young adults and adults with CHARGE syndrome.  Sessions may include topics such as sex, sexual dysfunction, sustaining friendships, intimate relationships (flirting, dating, safety), guidance on drinking alcohol, social media skills, advocating on the job and in the community, and question and answer time periods. A similar format was conducted prior to the 2017 International CHARGE Syndrome Conference and Kasee and Dan consider it to be their most successful young adult session yet.

Note: Kasee and Dan would like participants to submit questions prior to the conference so they can prepare for this session.  Please email m.rich@chargesyndrome.org.au  by 11 May if you are attending this group.

You Can’t Ask That – Young Adults Panel

Sunday 11:40am-12:15pm

A conference favourite, this year’s Young Adult Panel will be a little bit different. Our three young adult panellists will answer four or five questions each. A fun and insightful session, we hope to learn more about individuals with CHARGE syndrome and what makes them rise triumphantly time and again. No registration required, just come along to the session in the main conference room at 11:40am on Sunday.

What do I need to do?

Register now! If you are interested in any of the care or activity options listed, register now so that we have plenty of time to coordinate volunteers and paid carers.

Got any other ideas?

If we have missed the mark here in providing an activity that suits you better, let us know. Contact one of the committee listed below. Perhaps you’d prefer to spend some time shopping, go to a football match or a movie? Our volunteers will try and make it happen for you.  All ideas will be considered as we want to provide you with an enjoyable conference experience too. NOTE: there may be costs involved in accessing other excursion options.
