Tips for tackling NDIS

There are many steps involved in the process of obtaining and using NDIS funding. One of our CHARGE parents has put together these tips to follow.

Step 1: Learn as much as you can

Start on the NDIS website and keep an eye out for seminars or workshops near you, run by local service providers. There is also an NDIS Grassroots Discussion facebook group you could join to learn from discussions or ask your own questions.

Here are some more ideas from Donna Shaw of VALID Inc, Melbourne, in her presentation: Your First Plan from the Melbourne 2018 CHARGE conference.

Step 2: Gather evidence

Prepare ahead to give you enough time to schedule and attend appointments with health professionals to get assessments done and then reports written. Get reports from both medical and therapeutic specialists.

Step 3: Prepare for your planning meeting

Set your goals using the outcomes framework set out by the NDIA. Create a proposed budget, including the number of hours or sessions you need for the year, and use the NDIS rates. The outcomes framework and rates are available in the NDIS price guide.

Step 4: Using your plan

Start using your funding as soon as it is available - the year will go by quickly! Plan ahead for your annual review which will be around 11 months after your first plan is approved. You will need updated reports and assessments in time for this.

If you are not satisfied with your plan, you are able to appeal. This must be done within 3 months of getting your plan. Read up on How to review a planning decision. The response to your appeal could take many months, so in the meantime, keep using your package and working towards your goals.
